Improving Safety and Mobility

In Anderson County, U.S. 29 provides an important connection to 85 and the City of Anderson. As growth continues, the Appalachian Council of Governments (ACOG), in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, and the Anderson Clemson Area Transportation Study, have turned to exploring mobility options to better serve the community and traveling public. The study will include substantial public engagement aimed at measuring the current conditions and potential solutions to improve safety and mobility.

  • Public Workshop

The first Public Workshop was in March 2024. Participants were able to drop in at their leisure to learn more about the Study and speak directly with the Study team. Check back to learn about the next public workshop opportunity.

  • Online Survey

To successfully develop a vision and recommendations for the U.S. 29 corridor, ACOG gathered input from the public via an online survey. We want to know, what do you think the future of U.S. 29 should look like? There will be another study survey available for the community to share their input on the design and planning alternatives proposed.

  • Engage Online

Information shared at the March workshop is posted on this website. Continuing scrolling down this website to see additional content about the Study and opportunities to stay informed.

Corridor Overview

U.S. 29 in Anderson County provides an important connection to Interstate 85 and the City of Anderson. Currently, U.S. 29 varies between a four-lane divided highway and a rural two-lane farm-to-market road. The Appalachian Regional Freight Mobility Plan has identified the corridor as a potential alternative route to Interstate 85.

Existing Conditions

The majority of the corridor is rural, but Anderson County is seeing both residential and commercial growth. Over the last five years, the total population has jumped by 10,000 and current projections indicate the population will increase by 25,000 by 2035.

As described in the Anderson County Northeast Area Plan, the future land use along this corridor is planned to be mainly industrial, providing a commercial node at I- 85 and U.S. 29 at Easley Hwy. New growth will be directed into areas where public services are available, while arterial roadways should provide interconnectivity to development. Safety is also a concern, ensuring that the function of roadways will facilitate free flow of traffic while also accommodating bicycle and pedestrian access that will link to destinations.

ACOG’s Board of Directors and the Regional Transportation Advisory Committee recommended a formal study of the U.S. 29 corridor as part of the ACOG 22 Long Range Transportation Plan update, given the current and expected future growth.

Study Timeline

This Study will be conducted on a 12-month schedule, from January 2024 to December 2024.
